For all of the wonder the world can hold, don't wait to look until you grow old
L.C. Lawless
Picture Book Writer (and other things)
L. C. Lawless (she/her/hers) writes lyrical picture books inspired by nature, and the seemingly small but meaningful moments of childhood, that resonate deep within us. Her stories are shaped by her intrigue and wonder for the natural world, and belief that it serves as a rich catalyst for human inspiration, growth and connection.
Lucy is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), and a Horticultural Therapy Facilitiator, bringing to her writing a wealth of experience that has guided her understanding of human behavior across the lifespan, and the subtle but enduring role of nature in the awakening of ideas, learning and growth, amongst us all.
At the heart of her work is a deep commitment to inclusion - Lucy believes that every reader should feel seen, and recognize elements of their own lives, embedded within words and illustrations that reflect the world we live in, today.
Words Gathered (here and elsewhere)
Lucy grew up between rolling green hills, in the countryside of the south of England, and the inimitable Valley of a Thousand Hills, South Africa. The fields, hedgerows and ancient oak forests of England, contrasted with the diverse and abundant landscapes of South Africa, helped shaped the lens through which she now sees the world. After high school, Lucy moved to the British Midlands to study psychology, graduating with a Master's degree. Shortly thereafter, an internship in the Florida Keys unfolded into an unexpected journey, that led her to making her home in the United States.
After time spent living in Florida and Virginia, Lucy can now be found in the suburbs of Chicago, where she lives with her husband, daughter and Foxy the dog.
Between writing, work and family, Lucy is continually drawn towards the natural world - through gardening, photography and travel.
Words Shared (near and far)
Lucy loves connecting with fellow writers, illustrators and industry professionals, whether for brain-storming, thoughtful critique or creative collaboration. If you're an agent or publisher interested in exploring her work, she would be delighted to hear from you, too!
